Instructions and Tips for Viewing the Neurophysiologic Synchrony Movie.

(1.) Push the play button.

(2.) To slow down, decrease the speed control slider.

(3.) To examine team engagement at any point in time, pause the simulation and click on an island.

(4.) Drag the slider over the Entropy bar to manually scroll the window.

(5.) To learn more, read the briefing story.

Tips! It is probably best to drag the Frames per Minute (fps) scroll bar to the left so that the movie does not go too fast. When the entropy drops, it is probably a good time to pause the movie and then click in the center of one or more of the clusters. A few good places are around epoch 790 where there is a dip in entropy…..here the dominant transitions are around pattern 24-25 (an engaged team) whereas around 2000-2100 they are patterns 10-11 (a less engaged team). So decreased entropy alone is not necessarily bad….it depends on what is causing the drop. For now we safely say that an entropy drop detects events of significance to the team.

These studies were conducted with navigation training tasks that are integral components of the Submarine Officer Advanced Course at the US Navy Submarine School, Groton, CT. The task is a high fidelity Submarine Piloting and Navigation (SPAN) simulation that contains dynamically programmed situation events which are crafted to serve as the foundation of the adaptive team training.
